I think the main problem of christians is that they can’t conceive true enthusiasm for a traditional practice. They need to be threatened with eternal damnation, hereditary curse or torture in their flesh, to understand why a rite is followed. They always talk about faith, they understand fanatism, but they can’t understand really pleasing and spontaneous religious practice. When something is followed spontaneously, they suspect it to be "a sect", especially when it comes to something ethnic and pagan.
I think it is why they want to see oppression everywhere in Hindu society. They just can't conceive that a religion, a god or a guru, can have true loving followers. It has to be something wrong like their fantasied projections on the caste system, polygamy and their disinformation about suttee. Even in everyday life, when someone is happier than them, Hindus tend to know how to be like this, whereas lots of christians will persuade themselves there is something wrong and ugly behind this apparent happiness. So to most of them, an honest religion must have dull followers, an explication for each practice, and some system of terror like the fear of hell and eternal damnation, something that they think appropriate for children. The rest is all demon cults. They are some kind of upside-down people.
